Charles M. Brock, Jr.
Charles Moore Brock, Jr., 96, of Broad Run, Virginia, former longtime resident of McLean, died on Saturday, May 6, 2017. He was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on May 1, 1921, the son of Charles M. Brock, Sr. and Maggie Lee Walker Brock.
In September 1939, just as World War II was erupting in Europe, he entered The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in Charleston, graduating with a degree in political science in 1943. From 1943 to 1946 he first served as an artillery officer in Key West, Florida, before being assigned to the European Theatre where as a First Lieutenant in the army's press censorship corps he witnessed the V2 bombings in London, the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp, the meeting of the American and Russian Armies at the Elbe River, and the Nuremberg Trials.
After the war he studied law at the University of Virginia before going to work for the U.S. Gypsum Company and Georgia-Pacific Corporation. In 1960 he embarked on a forty-five year career as an investment adviser for Bellamah, Neuhauser & Barrett Inc., Johnston, Lemon & Co., Wheat First Securities, and Janney Montgomery Scott.
He married Dorothy Geraldine Whalen in 1957. Over the course of six decades, until her death in 2003, he and Gerry shared a life built upon an unwavering commitment to family, friends, and community. Their home was always a warm and welcoming place cherished by all who knew them.
He is survived by four children and their spouses: Charles M. Brock III and his wife, Caroline; Jacqueline Brock Hampton and her husband, Robert; Alexandra W. Brock and her husband, William Baer; Anthony W. Brock and his wife, Rula, and four grandchildren: Lucy Baer, Walker Brock, Chiara Hampton and Leena Brock.
Mr. Brock was preceded in death by his wife Gerry, a daughter Andrea Merrett Brock, and sisters Eleanor Brock Carter and Margaret Brock Wilson.
There will be a memorial service at 11am on Saturday, June 10th with reception to follow at Grace Episcopal Church, 6507 Main Street, The Plains, VA 20198.
