David Butler Pye, long time resident of Alexandria and Orlean, VA, passed on January 27, 2018 at age 75. He was born March 1, 1942 in Hartford, CT, the son of the late William Irving Pye and Jean Butler Pye.
David was a 1963 engineering graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and its Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program. He earned master's degrees from George Washington University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
As a naval officer, he was assigned to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, where he continued his civilian career until his retirement as Director for Reactor Engineering in 2001. He was the recipient of Senior Executive Service meritorious awards.
David was awarded NASA's Public Service Medal in recognition of his service as an investigating consultant for the Columbia Accident Investigation Board.
He was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed photography and astronomy.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol Folkins Pye; daughters and their husbands; Cynthia and Craig Buckles of Muncie, IN; Karen and Michael Garber of Plano, TX; Jennifer and Christopher Johannes of Gaithersburg MD; two brothers, William Pye Jr. of Charlotte, NC and Daniel Pye of Austin, TX and six grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, July 18 at 3 PM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mt. Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA Interment at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, July 19 at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fauquier County Public Library, 11 Winchester St., Warrenton, VA 20186 or the Fauquier County SPCA PO Box 733, Warrenton VA 20188.
