Obituary

Gertrude J. Hodul of Warrenton, VA peacefully passed away at Fauquier Hospital on Friday, November 30, surrounded by her loving family. She was 85.

A devout Catholic, Gertrude (Gertie) exemplified a life of service to God and to others. Born and raised in Hightstown, NJ, Gertrude was the daughter of the late Frederick K. Byrne and Elizabeth G. (Braun) Byrne. Gertrude was the beloved wife of 65 years of her late husband, Milan.

Gertrude was 19 when she married Milan on June 28, 1952. They settled in Hightstown and immediately began their family. A devoted wife and mother, Gertrude lovingly raised a family of 11 children in Hightstown before moving to Warrenton in 1984. Her warm, welcoming home was always open to her family and friends.

While living in Warrenton, Gertrude volunteered at Fauquier Hospital and at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton. She was a Franciscan, and through her work at St. John’s, she prayed, assisted at Masses at local nursing homes, and worked at the Fauquier County Food Distribution Coalition. She also collected and organized donations both for the food coalition and for shipment to Africa.

When she was not praying or taking care of others, Gertrude enjoyed making rosary beads, playing Scrabble and Words with Friends, and making jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed annual trips to the Outer Banks with her family and trips to Williamsburg with her friend Toya.

A pillar of strength and devotion, Gertrude will be greatly missed and always loved by everyone who was blessed to know her.

Gertrude is survived by her 11 children and their spouses: Kathleen and Wayne Rogers of East Windsor, NJ, Deborah Hodul of East Windsor, NJ, Marie and Jeff Taylor of Midland, VA, Ann and Robert Crawford of Middletown, MD, Milan Jr. (Chip) and Rita of New Egypt, NJ, Michele and Carl Rubino of Allentown, NJ, Christopher and Ann Hodul of Warrenton, VA, Karen and Edward Rosenberger of Warrenton, VA, Richard and Angela Hodul of Warrenton, VA, Brian and Kristen Hodul of Warrenton, VA, and Stephanie and Steven Christianson, of Warrenton, VA. She is survived by 35 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Kathleen Ezell as well as her in-laws: Arthur Ezell, Helen Hodul, Ann Byrne, Rosemary Byrne, Edwina Byrne, Barbara Schauer, Jean Byrne, and James Setneska.

Gertrude is predeceased by two sisters (Margaret Larkin and Elizabeth Setneska), six brothers (Frederick, Robert, Edward Charles, Edward John, Vincent, and John Byrne), and two brothers-in-law (Francis Larkin and Steven Hodul).
