Irene May Mangum, 93, passed away on March 5, 2019.
She was born in Arkansas on May 24,1925, and grew up in Oklahoma. During WWII she worked in the boatyards in Merced, California. She married Samuel W. Mangum in 1952. They traveled and lived at Air Force bases in Texas, Mississippi, California, and Japan. After retirement, they settled in San Diego where they lived on a sailboat at Point Loma. They sailed the Thirty-two-foot Catch to Hawaii. After returning to the Mainland they moved to Arizona and took up gold mining.
After the death of her husband, Sam, she remained by herself in Arizona until 2013 at the high desert home she loved. At the age of 88, she blessed her youngest daughter by moving to Virginia.
She is survived and will be greatly missed by three children: Paula May Coath, Joseph Lloyd Mangum and Nicki Irene Daly; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
