John L. Artherholt, Jr., of Transfer, PA passed away on December 25, 2018 in Warrenton, VA surrounded by his loving family. He was 95 years old.
John was born on May 15, 1923 in Transfer to John L. Artherholt, Sr. and Grace L. McConnell. He grew up farming and attended school in his hometown, graduating from Transfer High School in 1941.
He owned Artherholt Trucking and delivered lime and coal in his dump trucks. John spent the rest his adult years driving 18-wheelers. He put in many years behind the wheel transporting materials for tubing and asphalt companies. He also served as Supervisor for Pymatuning Township.
In his free time, John enjoyed gardening and spending time with his wife of 65 years, Emily J. Artherholt. After Emily passed in 2011, he spent his time baking pies and making a variety of delicious soups. They both shared a love of animals and became particularly fond of cats in their later years. John and Emily’s cat passed away recently but he found a new friend Karly a kitten which will reside with his daughter in VA.
He was a lifetime member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church of Transfer, PA. until it dissolved. Later joined Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Sharon, PA. until it dissolved. John then attended Zion United Church of Christ and Unity Presbytery.
John is survived by his children: Donna Calvin, wife of Jeff Calvin of Sharon, PA., Denise Rowe of Sharpsville, PA., Marianne Artherholt , wife of Jack Smith of Warrenton, VA., and Diane Gibson of Simpsonville, KY., and longtime friend Naomi Derr and his brother David Artherholt.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Shirley McKenzie.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11:00 am at Zion’s United Church of Christ, located at 17 Church Street, Transfer, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the National Stroke Association.
