Obituary

Lisa Watson O’Bannon, age 61, died peacefully in Jacksonville, FL surrounded by the love of her family after a long journey with Early-onset Alzheimer’s disease on the 28th of January 2019.

She was born July 3rd, 1955 in Greenville, OH and after living in Upstate New York, moved to Warrenton, VA for her last two years of high school. Lisa fell in love and returned after college to start a family and a career in Fauquier County.

Lisa received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from James Madison University. Upon her return to Warrenton, Lisa began a career teaching for Fauquier County Public Schools, first at P.B. Smith, then at C. Hunter Ritchie Elementary. At Ritchie, Lisa was the “Sheriff-in-charge” for over 15 years at the “Kinderosa Ranch” (her classroom) for hundreds of local kindergarten “cowgirls and cowboys”.

In 2001, The Washington Post recognized Lisa for her teaching excellence in the region by naming her a recipient of the Agnes Meyer “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” Award. These teachers are honored for their work in the classroom, creativity, innovation, and contribution to the improvement of education. Lisa was nominated for her extraordinary vision and commitment to teaching children with learning disabilities in her classroom. "She has a perfect rapport with her students.“ Said a note recommending Lisa O'Bannon, who teaches kindergarten in Fauquier County, "She reaches 'em and she teaches 'em.”

For fun, she volunteered as a National Ski patrol-woman for 30 years, enjoyed wine tasting, being on the water, dancing, laughing, and cheering on her children at every sporting event.

Lisa later achieved her advanced degree in School Administration from the University of Virginia in 2007. Soon after, she transitioned from kindergarten to begin teaching third grade, with the intent to become a local school administrator.

The Early-onset Alzheimer’s began in 2009 at the young age of 51. Lisa then experienced a ten-year journey as the disease progressed.

Lisa was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Mickey Watson. She is survived by her children Michael Stephen O’Bannon, and Lindsay Marie O’Bannon (Husband John Evans), and brothers Don and Bill Watson.

A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 3:00pm at Moser Funeral Home 233 Broadview Ave. Warrenton, VA 20186. A family-only service will later be held in Colon, Michigan where Lisa’s ashes will be buried next to her mother.
