Obituary

Marilyn Trommer Lewis, age 82, formerly from Chantilly, Va, passed away suddenly in her home in the Plains, VA on Wednesday, May 29. Marilyn was born and raised in upstate NY, and lived life as a leader and mentor. As a young woman she was a proud and active member of Rochester Youth for Christ which instilled the virtues of faith, hope and joy; virtues that would mold and define her life. She attended Benjamin Franklin High School and continued her studies at Bob Jones University. At 19 she married and her greatest life's passion of motherhood blossomed and flourished. She had 3 beautiful daughters Cynthia, Lisa and Tricia. Volunteering in endless community organizations, Marilyn was the PTA president, Girl Scout Leader, Team-Mom, chauffeur and cheerleader extraordinaire for her kids. She organized amazing PTA fundraisers, carnivals and countless school activities. She received endless awards and accolades for her incredible leadership and years of dedicated volunteerism and community service. She loved cooking and hosting a good party, and would often host top military formal dinners, the Officers Wive's Club, the Bridge Club, and was definitely known to all the kids in the neighborhood to host the best backyard end-of-school-year parties. She taught her kids at a young age the importance of giving back by helping them organize their own backyard Carnivals for Muscular Dystrophy and always encouraged participation in the annual Walk for Mankind. A life-long avid knitter, crocheter and seamstress she made costumes for numerous school productions, cheerleading uniforms, ice skating dresses and provided endless crocheted blankets, scarves, caps and baby hats to women's shelters and other area organizations. Marilyn thoroughly loved her family, her life, her Redskins and watching football with Brian. After retirement from a rewarding career as an Executive Legal Secretary at Jones Day Law Firm in Washington DC, she traveled extensively and continued volunteering, most recently at NOVANT Haymarket Medical Center. Always eager to learn and help others, at 80 she reactivated her Va Real Estate License to help Trish with her growing business. She had a magical ability to communicate joy, love, compassion, kindness and understanding to everyone she met. She never knew a stranger. Her acts of kindness and generosity permeate every community in which she lived. Marilyn's greatest joy in life was being a loving, generous, devoted mom to her kids and beloved Grammy to Sarah and Rachel. She is survived by daughters, Cynthia (Bill) Fletcher, Lisa (Richard) Caplan and Tricia (Brian) Kapinos; two beloved grandchildren, Sarah and Rachel Caplan; her mother, Audrey Spinnichia; four siblings Roberta Whittemore, Phyllis (Dennis) Lundgren, David (Debi) Trommer, Richard (Joanne) Trommer and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
