Obituary

Richard (Dick) Allan Penner, 80, died peacefully Sunday, June 30, 2019 at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton following his long battle with ALS.

He leaves his loving wife of 56 years, Carla (Long) Penner; his son, Jeffrey Allan Penner; his daughter, Julie Ann Lunsford, his grandchildren, Amanda Grace, Jacob Blair, Matthew Richard, and Abigail Mae, and many dear friends and family.

Born and raised in Altoona, PA, the son of John and Hulda (Unruh) Penner, he met and married his wife, Carla Long at Independent Bible Church in 1963. He was a resident of Manassas for 25 years where he and his wife raised their children before residing in Warrenton.

After high school, Mr. Penner attended Philadelphia College of Bible where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Bible. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1961 as a commissioned officer where he moved up the ranks to Captain. He flew F8U fighter jets on reconnaissance missions over Cuba before leaving the Corps in 1966.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Mr. Penner had the opportunity to work for the Stanwick Corporation in Arlington, VA where he served as a Human Resources manager for more than 15 years. Gifted at working with people, Mr. Penner continued his career with Dewberry & Davis in Fairfax, VA as Vice President of Human Resources until his retirement in 2009.

Mr. Penner and his wife, Carla, were members of several churches in the area including McLean Bible, Gainesville Presbyterian, Cornerstone Presbyterian, and most recently Heritage Presbyterian in Warrenton, VA. He taught Bible classes and served faithfully as an elder for many of those years. His greatest desire was for people to know Jesus Christ as Savior and know the truth of the Bible. He leaves a beautiful legacy of faith and wisdom for his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Penner was a musician who sang and played the piano for many years. With a strong bass voice, he sang in quartets and church choirs, in addition to singing solos for many church and private events through the years. Mr. Penner had a passion for fishing and could often be found “wetting a line” at local ponds and rivers. He taught his children and grandchildren, as well as countless others, how to enjoy his favorite pastime. He also enjoyed reading, tennis, and playing games with family and friends.

Viewing will be held Friday, July 5th at Moser Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00pm. A second visitation will precede service from 11-12pm with a funeral service following on Saturday, July 6th at 12:00pm at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Warrenton, VA followed by a private burial with full military honors.
