Toya Thompson Finzel passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 in her home in Rixeyville, Virginia with two of her daughters by her side. She was born on May 2, 1935 in Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her husband William Jack Finzel, mother Mary W. Thompson, father George Mark (Tommy) Thompson, and infant son John Joseph Finzel.
Toya graduated in 1955 from Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She worked as a registered nurse at Garfield Memorial Hospital, Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C. and Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia. She was a nurse for eighteen years at Hematology-Oncology Associates in Fairfax, Virginia and five years at Sunrise Assisted Living in Northern Virginia. Toya attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton, Virginia and was a secular Franciscan. She was a long-time auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. After retirement, Toya greatly enjoyed volunteer work; she volunteered for Fauquier Health, the Fauquier County Food Distribution Coalition and Brookside Nursing Home. Toya sponsored several children in Central America and one elder in Africa through Unbound.
Toya received excellent care from the nurses at Fauquier Hospital Infusion Center and Capital Caring Hospice.
She is survived by her five children: Lewis Jack Finzel of Oakland, California, Laura Evans of Menlo Park, California, Colleen Jackson of Wilmington, Delaware, Jacki Finzel of Rixeyville, Virginia, Sharon Finzel of Carrollton, Georgia and by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Steven A. Thompson or Springfield, Virginia.
The family will receive friends at Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Avenue, Warrenton, VA on Thursday, March 14, 2019 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday, March 15, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 271 Winchester Street, Warrenton, VA. Interment will follow in Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, VA.
