Elsie Ruth Mayo, 90, peacefully passed away July 16, 2017, at her home in Warrenton, Virginia. She is survived by her devoted husband William C. Mayo of Warrenton, VA; daughter, Theresa Huffman of Powhatan, VA; son, William C. Mayo, Jr. of South Daytona Beach, FL; daughter, Patricia Stine of Jeffersonton, VA; and daughter, Karen Putnam of Warrenton, VA. She is the loving grandmother of Ted Huffman of Henrico, VA; Beth Wharton of Midlothian, VA; Becky Stine of Jeffersonton, VA and Mike Stine of Culpeper, VA. Elsie was great grandmother of Caroline and Paul Huffman and Jackson and Connor Wharton. Elsie is survived by her brother Marvin H. Broach of White Plains, MD.
She is preceded in death by parents Hutchinson and Ruth Broach of Index, VA; sister, Frances Wilt of San Diego, CA and brother, William Webster Broach of Lake Placid, FL.
Elsie was born June 26, 1927 in Ashland, VA and graduated from Tappahannock High School. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1945 and attended nursing school at St. Luke's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. There she received her diploma as a Registered Nurse in 1948 and began her nursing career. She married William (Bill) Mayo in March 1948. They celebrated 69 years of marriage March 4, 2017.
Elsie dedicated her life to her husband and children and instilled in them the importance of love of family and devotion to God. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church for over 50 years and participated in UMW and bible study groups. She was well-known for her gardening skills and tended the church yard flowers for many years until her health declined.
Visitation on Tuesday July 18, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. followed by funeral service at 12:00 PM at Bethel United Methodist Church, 6903 Blantyre Road, Warrenton, Virginia. Reception in social hall following the service.
Interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, Virginia 23222 on July 19, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. Reception at the home of Theresa Huffman in Powhatan, VA will follow the graveside service.
