Dr. James Orlando Hodgkin III, a fourth generation Warrenton native and third generation dentist, died January 25, 2010 at Fauquier Hospital.  Born August 23, 1922 he was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cornelia Hodgkin, Jr. and his sister, Cornelia Hodgkin Smith.

He was a graduate of Warrenton High School, Class of 1939, Virginia Military Institute Class of 1943, and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1949.  He began his dental practice with his father, Dr. “Biggy” Hodgkin and uncle, Dr. William Hodgkin.

During World War II he served in the Army’s 27th Division on Okinawa and in the occupation duty in Japan.  His second call to duty was during the Korean War when he entered the U. S. A. F. Dental Corps as a 1st Lieutenant and served at Maxwell A. F. B. in Montgomery, AL.  He later returned to Warrenton where he practiced until retirement in 1993.

He was a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church, a member of the Rotary Club, Scout Master of Troop 161, and an active VMI alumnus.

Some of his favorite hobbies included gardening, photography, water color painting, music, and reading books.  He enjoyed singing in the choir while he was able.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sarah (Sally) Swift Hodgkin; his daughters, Carter and Harriet Hodgkin, Jamie Hodgkin Beach, Cornelia Hodgkin Benson, Sarah Hodgkin Sudduth, and son James Hodgkin, IV.  

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at St. James Episcopal Church, Warrenton by Rev. C. Christian Pierce.  Interment in Warrenton Cemetery.
