Fred G. Wayland Jr. died at Fauquier Hospital on February 26, 2010, after battling ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease).
Mr. Wayland, born on February 6, 1929 in Crozet VA, was the oldest son of Frederic G. Wayland Sr. and Sarah Meredith Wayland, who moved to Fauquier County shortly after his birth.
In 1947, he graduated from Randolph Macon Military Academy in Front Royal VA, and attended the University of Virginia until 1951, when he joined the US Navy, serving as a hospital corpsman until 1955.
He achieved a Bachelor of Business Administration from William and Mary VPI in 1958 and returned to Fauquier County as an employee of the Peoples National Bank of Warrenton. He retired 34 years later, as the Bank President, in 1992.
During his 80 years as a citizen of Fauquier County, Mr. Wayland served his community as a scout leader for Troop 742 and a member of the Vestries of Leeds and Little Fork Episcopal Churches. He volunteered for Fauquier Hospital, the Ruritan Club, the Orlean Volunteer Fire Department, and the Warrenton Jaycees. He provided legal guardianship through the Fauquier County Circuit Court, and served on the Boards of the American Heart Association, the Jesse and Rose Loeb Foundation, Partnership for Warrenton, and the Virginia Bankers Association. He served as a President of the Fauquier Cancer Society and Hospice Support of Fauquier County; and as Treasurer of the Fauquier Livestock Exchange and Little Fork Episcopal Church.
He was an honorary lifetime member of the Fauquier Club, and recognized by the Fauquier Citizen as one of the “Five Who Made a Difference” in Fauquier County in 2002.
Mr. Wayland is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children Beth Wayland Tierney, Scott and KarolAnne Wayland; his four grandchildren, JohnScott and Sean Tierney, and Meredith and Sarah Wayland; and his brother, John Wayland, all of whom still reside in Fauquier County.
A memorial service will be held at Little Fork Episcopal Church 16461 Oak Shade Road, Rixeyville, Virginia on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 1:30 pm.
