Carl H. Norton Defense Intelligence Agency Senior Executive Carl H. Norton, 83, retired Deputy Director of Resources and Services for the Defense Intelligence Agency, died peacefully at his home in Warrenton Virginia on March 27. Born in Phenix City Alabama, he had been a long-time resident of Fairfax VA before moving to Warrenton in 1988, where is has resided with his with wife of 59 years. Mr. Norton a life-long patriot faithfully served his country from age 16 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. As a LST gunner’s mate he fought in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. After sustaining a disabling injury in the course of his service, he was honorably discharged in 1945 and became an active and ardent supporter of disabled veterans as an officer of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization. He continued to support the DAV until his death. In 1946 Mr. Norton continued his service to his country by becoming a dedicated civil servant with the Department of the Navy, where he ascended to the Senior Executive Service ranks in 1972. In 1976, he became the Deputy Director of Resources and Systems for the DIA and retired from that position in 1981. During the time of his civilian service he was the recipient of multiple awards and honors and, was recognized for his superior service and extraordinary contributions to the DIA and employees on many occasions. Upon his retirement from the DIA, Mr. Norton was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal. After his retirement from government service in 1981, Mr. Norton continued his work in the intelligence community as a consultant for many years. He founded the “NortonNet”, an informal lunch meeting at the Alpine Restaurant in Arlington, VA, providing a venue for government employees and people in private industry affiliated with the intelligence community to communicate and exchange mutually beneficial information. 20 years later this group continues to meet in the original spirit and vision of Mr. Norton and, is a Beltway staple with a regular and loyal following. Carl Homer Norton was the son of the late Fannie Norton (Kite) and Emory Norton. He is lovingly survived by his wife Juanita to whom he has been married since 1950, daughters Annette Norton, her husband Eric Ostrander, Patti Johnson and her husband Matt Johnson, four grand children, Emily, Elizabeth, Molly and husband Craig Smoot and, Kim and three great grandchildren, Edward, Jack and Madeleine. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm, Wednesday March 31, 2010 at the Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Avenue, Warrenton, VA 20186-2418. A reception at the family home will follow.
